NAME,
bearing the distinctive appellation of skaði lorelei rosengård, she was named for a jötunn and goddess who was associated with bowhunting and winter, with her middle name referring to a siren of sorts whose voice lured men to their deaths, and her last name translation to 'rose garden'. her aliases, collected over the years, include frozen pride and wavestrike, due to the nature of her attack patterns and modus operandi; she is also known by a variety of titles now, such as skaði frostbite and blizzard lancer for her signature sleights and battle style, which all in some way link to her elemental affiliation.
AGE,
still regarded by most vanir soldiers as an apprentice, she is young by their standards, and, indeed, has still got a fair amount to learn. her true age is approximately a hundred and nine years, though physically, she appears to be about twenty-one or thereabouts. the fact that she remains perpetually stoic and calm only adds to her air of detached world-weariness, though she has often been told that such a mindset is most unbecoming of a 'lady' such as herself.
GENDER,
seeing her, it would be quite easy to guess she is female, though there are a few raised eyebrows behind why she is a knight instead of an archer or something similar. then and again, she's keen to prove that she is every bit as capable as her male counterparts, even if she lacks their physical strength.
ORIENTATION,
even though she lacks the inclination and interest for matters of the heart and the more earthly side of relationships, she's still got eyes, though she finds herself more appreciative of males, thus making skaði of the heterosexual persuasion.
RACE,
born the daughter of an elf hunter and a throne (instead of from phozons), skaði is a pure-blooded elf, whose family have served the royal family for generations on end. it can be argued that she gets the best of both worlds, though her magical prowess is not quite as high as that of a caster, and her physical aptitude is fairly average.many would have presumed she would follow in her mother's footsteps as an archer, though she has proceeded to forge her own path as a unicorn knight, and long-suffering bodyguard to princess feyette.
ALLIANCE,
due to her lineage, it is only to be expected that skaði fights on the side of vanir, and serves as one of the close-knit trio of personal bodyguards to the heir to the throne. not naïve in the least, she is well-aware of the threats posed by the aesir, and finds herself utterly repulsed by the mere notion of them seeking to invade other countries. despite her station, she is a bit of a pacifist at heart, and despises the fact that the aesir forces have no qualms about destroying anything and everything which stands in their path.

+POSITIVE,
if anything, a particular trait skaði possesses in seemingly limitless amounts is patience: whilst some others lack it entirely and are quick to start ripping their hair out in frustration, she is prone to merely taking anything in her stride and barely batting an eyelid, no matter how exasperated or incredulous she is inclined to feel. being pragmatic, skaði is ruled by logic and wits; this is probably why she is quite incapable of comprehending the fickle whims and fancies of feyette, though she has shown herself to be rather impish, and not entirely lacking a sense of humour. she is greatly loyal to her friends and, of course, the royal family, being fiercely protective of her nearest and dearest, and undoubtedly valiant when it comes to making sure they are not harmed. adding to that, she is distinctly gentle and peaceable, a rather odd disposition for a soldier to possess: skaði generally dislikes conflict and confrontations, and avoids it if she can.
above all, though, skaði is highly competent and responsible, and strong-willed, to boot: her familial expectations and the pressures of her station are what caused her to mature quickly, after all. resourceful and versatile, her quick wit and passionate drive are the very forces which saw her rise through the ranks; she is known for being calm and collected at all instances: panicked hysteria is just something she does not do well in the least, and no matter what the situation, be it grimly facing enemy forces or attempting to escape from an overeager feyette dead-set on forcefully shoving her into something more ladylike. highly observant and perceptive, she operates not only with a sharp mind but relies also on instinct, which pretty much helps her in all aspects of her life: people-reading is something she is quite adept at, after all.
being the practical person that she is, it is only expected for skaði to be laconic and honest but yet remaining diplomatic: never let it be said that she lacks tact, for that is another quality she possesses by the bucketload; as a result of that, she is distinctively humble and, if anything, altruistic and honourable: she prioritises her comrades above herself, and is quick to deflect compliments: partially because she doesn't quite know how to respond to them, partly because she feels she is undeserving of them, and partly because she feels she has no room for them: actions speak louder than words, after all.
-NEGATIVE,
even otherworldly patience runs out sometimes. for all her vast reserves of tolerance, skaði is known for being rather sardonic, with the most unfortunate habit of being snide and snappy when caught in a particularly bad mood; she can be almost harsh and callous to those who bring out the worst in her, whereupon the usually-serene elf is known to have no issues at all about running through an offender with her infamous lance. being quite sceptical leads to her next negative: skaði is irrepressibly and absurdly stubborn, and is ill-inclined to backing down from confrontations. her recklessness is sure to be the death of her, though: for all her impeccable calm, she places comparatively little value in her own existence, and has the most unfortunate tendency to provoke and tempt fate even when it is not required of her.
thanks to her spending her life training and sparring, her social skills aren't quite up to the same level as her combat skills: whilst able to carry conversation, skaði is somewhat reticent, and large social gatherings are where she starts to flounder; she is not that much of a talker, and prefers to let her actions speak for themselves, much to the chagrin of some certain people. much to her perpetual dismay, she also has a tendency to be emotional; however, being far too restrained leads to skaði keeping a lot hidden beneath the surface, much like an iceberg. this, in turn, leads to her occasionally feeling rather insecure about herself, as well as rather melancholic, and sometimes unsure of how to cope with her conflicting emotions. when she was younger, skaði was known to be quite the tempestuous and volatile wild card, and even though she has tamed and tempered herself remarkably, at times of stress, her infamous fiery temper unleashes itself with striking intensity.
on some level, skaði is rather mistrustful, and though she can be called a creature of habit, it does not stop her from being unpredictable: her moods can vary with mercurial intensity, where she can veer between placidly going along with whatever scheme feyette has planned, to flat-out refusing and entering a righteous tirade of sorts for a while. indeed, she has been called far too serious and sombre for her own good, though she insists there is a perfectly good reason behind her being stern: it builds character.
STRENGTHS,
❙ strong mental fortitude ,
amongst many, she is known for her ferocious tenacity and iron-clad determination and will; nothing has been known to be able to break her spirit, or force her to change her mind. put simply, when she says no, she means it, and no amount of cajoling or threats can force her to think otherwise. if anything, it is her strong sense of discipline and order which allows her to combat her fears and weaknesses, as well as carry secrets to her grave.
❙ adroit and agile ,
whilst týr and fenrir are known for their comparatively high endurance and strength, skaði instead possesses speed and dexterity, as well as a degree of natural poise. as many can readily attest, she is one of the hardest targets to hit, no matter what the range. even off the battlefield, she is quite the houdini, and is able to free herself from most tight spots, with a combination of flexibility and smart thinking. apart from that, she is skilled with her hands, and as a result has developed ambidexterity, and good hand-eye coordination to go with it.
❙ magical aptitude and resilience ,
in comparison to her comrades, as well as unicorn knights in general, skaði's strengths lie in magic-casting; whilst she inherited some of her father's physical strength, she took after her mother more, and as a result it skilled with spellcasting and offensive magical onslaughts. this, in turn, gives her a greater degree of resistance to being harmed by magic, which oftentimes makes her a prime target for physical attacks, which, in contrast, weather her down more easily. her elemental fortitude lies in the manipulating of a fluid medium, most notably water, where she is able to alter its properties as she sees fit.
❙ melee combat ,
before she began training, her magical repertoire was comparatively large, though her physical prowess was rather lacking. whilst long-ranged combat became her forte, she is surprisingly skilled in archery, though short-ranged melee combat has never really been her area of expertise. at best, she is proficient with a sword and with her lance, but not quite to the same degree as týr or fenrir. she is best with dual-wielding, though, for reasons unknown, and seeing her in action with two dragon lances is quite the sight to behold.
❙ domestic duties ,
despite being a knight, she was still trained and instructed on how to keep her living conditions at on optimum state; surprisingly enough, she's a reasonably good cook, and prefers to prepare her own meals rather than get other people to do it, which has earned her frowns of chagrin from some other soldiers. she's quite the dab hand at cleaning as well, what with a broom essentially being somewhat similar to a lance, and is great at getting to hard-to-reach areas. however, crack a joke about her being good housewife material and get your head lopped off: she takes her occupation very seriously, thank you very much.
WEAKNESSES,
❙ low staying power ,
speed, agility and being quite adept at magic gives her a fatal flaw: skaði is, quite simply, built to hit hard and fast, but not to last: whilst her attacks are fierce and furious, she succumbs to fatigue faster than týr or fenrir, and is markedly less concerned about defence than they are. whilst many have tried, time and time again to drill into her the fact that she needs to be able to learn how to use a shield properly and to stop recklessly attacking, such entreaties have mostly fallen on deaf ears. as a consequence of that, she is often a prime target in the initial stages of combat, where a favoured strategy is to get her down and out first before she can wreck too much havoc.
❙ literal-minded ,
whilst she does posses quite a quirky sense of humour, with her witticisms mostly bordering on the ironic and wry, one thing she is quite unable to properly fathom is the idea of metaphors, similies and impressively over-the-top hyperboles in jokes and in speech. due to her amazing ability to take things far too seriously, whilst others will be reduced to fits of tearful, hysterical laughter by some wisecrack or another, skaði is sure to be the cause of much forehead-slapping with her far too pertinent questions related to why the punchline of the joke is like that.
❙ small talk ,
whilst sociable and generally affable, one of the areas skaði fails rather majestically at is small-talk: she is more content to sit in a peaceable and companionable silence than fill it with nonsensical, irrelevant chatter, though many beg to differ. she is often the architect of awkward silences and nervous bouts of uncertain laughter, what with her paltry attempts at 'breaking the ice' and lightening the mood. in short, she is only able to carry a nice, meaningful conversation if there is actually a topic to work off, and one of her pet peeves is, surprise surprise, talking about the weather.
❙ princess feyette ,
as is the case with her colleagues, a point of contention with skaði is the capriciousness of the fairy princess. though she is less likely to succumb to imploring looks and wheedling than týr and fenrir, there are only so many times she can say 'no'. as a result, more often than not, she allows herself to be beget and beleaguered by the entreaties of the princess, and has, much to her eternal horror and chagrin, ended up doing a variety of silly things for feyette. still, for all her shortcomings, skaði respects the princess, and woe betide anyone who seeks to harm a hair on her head.
❙ insecurity issues ,
call it a mild paranoia of sorts, but one thing she cannot stand is constantly being compared to other people, especially her friends and family. after all, everybody has their own shortcomings, and nobody is perfect, so they really shouldn't be expecting the same of her. no thanks to this, skaði has developed into quite the workaholic, and is immensely critical of herself, fearing that she is just not good enough to be doing her job. being strong-willed and strong-minded does not necessarily guard one from lingering suspicions of inadequacy, much to her dismay.
LIKES,
skaði's likes include storms, rough weather, thunder and lightning, 'scary' stories, string music, winters, sleeping in (oh, what a guilty pleasure), feeling the wind in her face, evenings, tidiness, watching sunsets, sweet, mild mulled wines, alcohol, order, discipline, listening to stories being told (the more amazing and absurdly out-of-this world, the better), sunrise, the ocean, sea breezes, rock-skipping, the smell of spring, strong-scented flowers, people-watching, learning new things, daydreaming, peace and serenity, target practise, birds, cats, companionship, camaraderie, 'art projects' (a.k.a., making and building things), being constructive, freedom, independence, wandering and travelling, oceans, myths and legends, listening to other opinions, archery, rainy afternoons, symbolism, puzzles, quiet, twilit evenings, idle chatter with friends, stargazing, cloudwatching, and plenty more.
DISLIKES,
skaði's dislikes include large social gatherings, small enclosed spaces, wide open spaces, crowds, dancing, hangovers, drunkards, rowdy men, lechers, duelling, uncertainty, loss, forgetfulness, weak wills, gullibility, amphibians, the aesir force, halja, talking about the future and herself, manipulation, confrontation, blazing, out-of-control infernos, wooden objects, attics, cellars, uncleanliness, arrogance, hypocrisy, humidity, overly hot summers, spicy food, gossip, her own insecurity issues, loneliness, failure, getting lost, losing purpose, war, being forced to wear anything overly formal or, heavens forbid, stylishly overembellished: ("skaði, stop clanking, clomping and clattering around in that armour and put on something more feminine and flattering this instant!"), thieves, cheats, backstabbers, deserters, cowards, flattery, giving up too easily, superstitions, being compared to others, puppets, and plenty more.
SECRETS,
❙ true name ,
as with all elves, skaði possesses a secret name which is uttered only when she is on the brink of death to enter the heavens instead of the netherworld. this elven name is veðrfölnir; she shares her secret name with the 'storm-bleached' hawk which perches atop the world tree. this name is symbolic in that just as the keen-eyed bird keeps watch over the tree, along with the eagle it accompanies, so skaði is relegated to watching over the fairy princess.
❙ the future ,
for all her sternness, gruffness and frosty exterior, skaði has vaguely expressed the wish to live a peaceful and uncomplicated life once all the conflict is resolved; it is not quite sure what she said, seeing as how she was inebriated at the time (one of the four times in her life it ever happened, actually), as was her confidante. however, that person can recall that skaði had revealed that she wanted to eventually settle down, perhaps with a family, if time permitted; whilst said person is alarmingly fond of teasing skaði about this, it is something the elf vehemently denies; mentioning her plans for the future will result in one being stabbed repeatedly and probably half-drowned.
❙ the vices ,
unlike týr, skaði is quite fond of alcohol, and whilst she prefers sweeter, mild wines and the like, nothing stops the other rowdy knights from challenging her to a round of drinking; many naturally assume she would be a lightweight when it comes to this, and are mostly confident of being able to drink her under a table in less than half an hour. however, the first time they tried that, skaði was left still standing and relatively sober (and amused) four hours later, surrounded by the orchestra of groans from her inebriated comrades. she is well-aware of the fact that she possesses an unusually high tolerance for alcohol (especially for a female elf of her petite stature), and constantly worries about what would happen if she actually got addicted to liquor. whilst she has yet to be seen drunk, skaði has been told by her family that she turns into either a cheerfully, outrageously talkative and playful drunk, or a dangerously passive-aggressive one with a hair-trigger temper that saw her nearly flooding and then flash-freezing a (thankfully) mostly empty tavern after thinking her intelligence and abilities had been insulted. needless to say, she was horrified by the recollections her relatives recounted to her face, and now calls it quits after a certain number of drinks.
❙ the fears ,
like every other person, skaði has her fears; in her case, it is a mild case of claustrophobia, and bad agoraphobia. put simply, she has a fear of having no escape and of being closed in, and whilst her case is not severe, she is prone to getting nervous or irritable when in a confined space for too long. in one never-forgotten incident when fenrir locked her in a closet to halt her protests, causing her to go through a mild panic attack; as soon as she was eventually freed, she proceeded to attempt blast-freezing the immediate vicinity and her saviour, a terrified palace attendant, before storming off in a shaky huff. such things are now a no-no with her: she won't object nearly as much to be dangled from a lamp until she has vented her spleen enough. in contrast, she fears wide, open and unfamiliar spaces due to the fact that it is hard to defend oneself there, and oftentimes a person is left with many blind spots, as well as a complete and utter vulnerability resulting from not knowing one's surroundings.
INVENTORY,
❙ aara and adiual, lances ,
most unicorn knights are proficient with both a sword and lance; however, skaði, being typically stubborn and adamant, instead took to training and sparring with two lances at once, thus giving rise to her preferred combat method today. whilst she is undoubtedly no match to the likes of fenrir's brute strength, she is an immensely tricky (and annoying) opponent to face due to her two lances, her speed and agility, and the fact that those damned lances have the potential to soundly jab anyone who approaches her from either the front or the back. loosely translating to dawn and dusk respectively, aara and adiual are identical in appearance, having a simple, lightly-engraved shaft, and with reinforced layers of cobalt and mythril silver forming the spearhead and 'tail' end. towering well over her own height, both of skaði's lances are approximately six feet long, and, despite the rather fragile appearance, are a lot stronger than they look.
❙ ainraxon, throwing knives ,
serving as her secondary weapons, these nondescript set of six throwing knives are kept on her person at all times, and are used as a last resort only when both lances have been knocked from her grasp, or she can no longer cast any magic. each knife is about the same length as her hand, and are weighted on the handle to ensure that they can be thrown effectively. mostly, though, the knives are wedged between her fingers, three in each hand, whereupon she battles in a distinctly feline manner, seemingly with claws which slash mercilessly at her foes. in the event that they are thrown (most often with reasonable accuracy), she will eventually have to retrieve them, and as a result, skaði will only ever throw a maximum of four and leave two in her possession to fight with. the knives all possess silvery blades and handles, with the latter having a pale cobalt sheen, and etched with grooves to ensure a sturdy grip.
❙ aikanar, gauntlets ,
many knights choose to pair their lances or swords with shields to provide a modicum of defence; however, what with skaði being proficient with using two lances at once in battle, she forsook a defensive item in favour for increased offense. whilst her preferred method of countering or guarding blows is by holding her two lances horizontally or vertically parallel to one another, or crossing them in front of her, it effectively means her hands are left unprotected, which is where this heavy-duty, specially crafted set of gauntlets come in. crafted from reinforced layers of overlapping and interlinked metal alloy plates, they cover her hands and end only at her elbows, thus effectively protecting her forearms as well; it takes on a pale silvery-blue sheen, with darker cobalt accents along the edges and are designed to be worn with her knight armour to provide extra defence. apart from ensuring that she doesn't lose any fingers, these gauntlets are great for short-range combat; any punch skaði throws effectively hurts quite a bit, as those metal plates can leave pretty bad bruises.
❙ antique ring ,
an heirloom ring passed down from her mother, and worn on the same necklace chain as princess feyette's amulet; constructed of fine silver filigree and set with tiny flecks of opal and sapphire, it has been in skaði's family for generations, and was given to her to remind her of her duties not only as a unicorn knight, but also as a daughter.
❙ feyette's flower charm, good luck amulet ,
like her colleagues, týr and fenrir, when she had first been assigned the duty of acting as a bodyguard to the fairy princess, skaði received a good-luck charm from her, in the shape of a five-pointed star. made from the crystallised petals of the tierce lumineris flower (or so she heard; skaði was not that great at botany, and didn't know much about plant names), and strung together in this pattern, it was given to her as an amulet of sorts, to wish her luck and victory on the battlefield. skaði's charm is a brilliant cerulean in colour, and encased in a protective coat of silver and glass and strung around her neck at all times.
SLEIGHTS,
❙ avalanche cynosura , -- ❄ magic-based -- ❄ medium to long range -- ❄ offensive and defensive
arguably her most powerful signature ability, which utilises the solid state of matter of her elemental forte. it revolves around altering the battlefield to skaði's advantage and impeding enemies, by creating pillars of ice from the ground by freezing moisture in the air. casting avalanche cynosura entails her tracing a circle around the targeted area with her weapon, whereupon with the completion of the circle, it glows a telltale blue-white, and when the sketched glyphs are activated, a mass of icicles will spring forth from below. this can also be done in a line, whereupon skaði drags her weapon through the ground in a swift, linear motion, sending magical energy down the blade; this causes icicles to erupt down the length of the line, creating a temporary, jagged wall of ice which dissipates after about half a minute, or by gouging a vertical area and creating a lethal fringe of ice spikes. she is able to cast this spell relatively quickly and with little warning, though oftentimes it is the prerequisite hand gestures and motions which give her away: if she makes a quick flick with her wrist, or sweeps her lance across the ground, it is a sign to start running. whilst a preparation time is required to form the circle (which she often does without the enemy knowing) is fairly short, the time delay between invocation and activation is long enough to alert most sharp-witted opponents, and even so, she is able to cast this once at a time; it is impossible for skaði to have avalanche cynosura activated in more than one instance, and she must allow the spell to dissipate entirely before attempting to cast it again, with a five-minute window allotted for recovery time. the tallest icicle pillars are about the height of her lance and as wide as she is, tapering to a sharp point, whilst the more normally-sized ones are about one metre tall and about as thick as a grown man's arm; regardless of size, this sleight affects a radius area of a maximum of ten feet around her; anything beyond this distance is nullified, and as such, she must take great care to ensure that her ice-circles fall within this set parameter. fire is an excellent way of countering this sleight, as well as retreating. immediately after activation, the ice pillars will dissipate back into frigid water vapour after about thirty seconds. if created in a small, one-foot radius circle around her, this ice wall can also function as a temporary shield, though once it vanishes she is more often than not left open to attack as she recovers. ice shields, walls and traps can be cast a maximum of eight times (regardless of size and form) before her energy reserves run near-fatally low. another manner this can be used is to make a sweeping motion through the air with the point of her lance, cutting a swathe which magically freezes the air in the arc of the swing; the icicles hang suspended for a split second, whereupon she has to make an accurate gesture in the designated direction with her weapon, sending a salvo of short icicle spears towards a target. these 'spears' are about the length of her palm, and, as is the case with the icicle walls, dissipate or melt after about thirty seconds. this variation of her sleight can be done a maximum of fifteen times, as it requires less energy than a full-scale ice trap or wall.
❙ dichotomy deluge , -- ❄ magic-based -- ❄ medium to long range -- ❄ offensive and defensive
her secondary signature ability; it revolves around her manipulation of water around her, usually in a more actively defensive manner than her previous sleight. whilst avalanche cynosura is all about strategy, planning and employing traps, dichotomy deluge is quite the opposite. with this sleight, skaði draws from the moisture in her surroundings to create spherical globules of water which can be used in a variety of ways, the most common of which is to drown enemies...on perfectly dry ground. whilst water is often seen as an element of life and nourishing, it can just as easily be a bringer of death, as many drowned sailors will know. it has to be noted that this particular sleight relies heavily on the availability of the water in skaði's immediate vicinity, which explains why she only ever uses this sleight during the aftermath of storms; in considerably drier conditions, dichotomy deluge is still possible, though it exerts a greater toll on her strength, by having her draw moisture from the air. in the event of a storm or downpour, this sleight entails controlling water and shaping it into spherical masses, and directing them towards a target, whereupon the water bubble will engulf them and literally drown them; each water orb must be at least two feet in diameter, which effectively means this particular stage is only usable when it rains. with smaller amounts of water, it is possible to extract small amounts of water vapour from the air and condense it, thus allowing skaði to send forth a salvo of small water shots which move at high velocity; if jettisoned forth with sufficient pressure and force, and concentrated at a certain target area, it is possible to knock an opponent off balance and even wind them, leaving them open for additional physical damage. this ability only works in an area radius of ten feet around her, and moving out of range will result in the water merely sloshing back uselessly to earth. large spheres can be formed a maximum of five times before skaði is unable to summon sufficient energy to control them, and in the case of the high-pressure water jets, can be done up to ten times. a regrouping time of up to five minutes between the execution of each attack is also necessary, or she risks overstraining her magical power. water shields are also possible, though again, they can only be created if there is sufficient water in the area, and if she has not used up too much of her energy reserves. the main pratfall of this ability is that skaði cannot control water without, again, the prerequisite hand motions: the direction in which her attacks are headed depends on how she sweeps her arm, the gestures she makes with her fingers, and a myriad of other factors. quite inconvenient, unfortunately, and additionally, a stubbornly amorphous liquid medium is incredibly annoying to control.
❙ crux scission , -- ❄ physical-based -- ❄ short range -- ❄ offensive
a markedly more physical-based sleight to balance out her two magical abilities; it utilises much charging-up of energy, by building up speed, velocity and momentum, as well as using the forces of gravity and inertia to her advantage. now, it has to be noted that skaði is comparatively slighter in build than her colleagues, and as such, lack their higher physical damage outputs. simply put, she envelops the tips of her weapons in a small burst of magical energy and infusing it with a mild, chilling aura; this results in her attacks (either from her lances or her knives) packing slightly more punch, as well as having the added effect of momentarily stunning an opponent: after all, nothing is worse than suddenly feeling a frisson of cold washing across your skin, even if it is soon dispelled by the heat of battle. additionally, she can build up energy by quick spinning (of her lances) to build up momentum for a stronger strike, which, if sufficiently fast, can break even leg bones; if she does not end in a direct strike, the resulting sweep of her weapon will send out a minor shockwave of stored energy, which can gouge through weaker armour, or push enemies back, thus staggering them. all in all, crux scission is not quite as useful as her other two sleights, and is used only when she does not dare to cast any of her magical attacks for fear of not having sufficient remaining strength to stand and fight or defend herself, or when it is just more beneficial to directly engage an opponent.
